Create a website yourself or have it created

Web design and websites are a broad subject that can help us realise our ideas and visions. It offers many possibilities for all kinds of projects we want to present on the internet. But before we decide whether to create the website ourselves or have it created, we must first understand the following:

In my blog I would like to talk to you about the basics of web design and show you which different areas there are to create a professional website and which ones are important. I am sure that after reading this blog you will understand what is important for your own website or professional web design!

What is webdesign

Web design is the structural, visual and functional design of websites. It includes a variety of factors such as creativity, social skills and a technical understanding. Here it is important to differentiate: Do you want to create your own web design for yourself as a private person e.g. as a blog for holiday destinations or your company website. Or do you want to move in a more professional direction, i.e. possibly offer your services to other companies as a web designer?

Own web design as a private person

Sure, nowadays anyone can easily create a website yourself. It sounds quite easy to drag and drop the contents with one click. Basically, the theme should be fixed for your own project. I have listed further points here:

  • Should it be a private blog or a company website?
  • Which hosting service do I use?
  • Which CMS system do I use?
  • Is there a company logo?
  • What colours do I use so that my target group feels comfortable on the site?
  • What should my layout look like?
  • How do I ensure the security of the data on my website and the users?
  • Do I already have content such as texts and images?
  • How do I optimise my website for Google?
  • Should I use social media?
You will soon have to ask yourself all these questions and many more. Quite a lot, isn’t it…? Of course you can teach yourself everything on YouTube and Google, but let’s be honest: who really has the time and inclination for that? I can also build my own house with Youtube, but I’d rather trust a reputable company.

Professional web design

Creating professional websites for others requires much more than designing your own desired layout. It involves constant training. After all, creating websites requires consulting with clients. Empathy and listening are required here. The customer and his or her needs for the website must be understood. This is the basis for the requirements. Project and time management also play an extraordinary role. Anyone planning a project (website) for a company should always proceed in an agile manner (SCRUM). This way, tasks can be prioritised and the customer is in focus. Technical progress must also be planned for continuously. True to the motto: “If you don’t move with the times, you move with the times”.

Planning a project

As already mentioned, the customer is in the foreground. If the client prefers a questionable colour combination or theme layout for his website, he should be advised professionally. However, the client’s wishes are always in the foreground, as the client is the one who pays for the service. Basically, the general conditions and goals should be defined by both sides at the beginning:
  • Services (website creation, hosting, monthly support, etc.)
  • Content (pages of the homepage plus sub-pages, texts and images, colour combinations, prices for the e-shop)
  • Legal aspects (imprint, privacy policy, general terms and conditions, cookies)
  • Time and project management (deadlines for completion, acceptance by…, what happens in case of non-delivery)
Once the general conditions have been established, the project can begin. In web design, the layout is planned in the design phase and elaborated through sketches or wireframes. After the layout has been approved (if not previously agreed), the actual part of the implementation begins with the creation of texts, images, fonts, graphics and other functions. Search engine optimised content (SEO) and responsive concepts are now mandatory for a successful web design. However, this would go beyond the scope of this blog post, so I am happy to link to the articles. Every project is different. It may depend on the client and the effort. Regardless, before the project is completed, the website must be tested. Testing the website through various methods of USER EXPERIENCE is also a big building block to a successful website. After taking all these points into account, the finished website can be presented to the client.
